Disclaimer: This tool is a record-keeping aid only and is not financial or tax advice. A completed travel diary does not guarantee a valid deduction claim. Individual circumstances and the deductibility of expenses vary. Always confirm the requirements with a registered tax agent or the ATO. Evercend Pty Limited does not hold an Australian Financial Services Licence.

About the travel diary requirement

  • A travel diary is required for sole traders and partners who are away from home for 6 or more consecutive nights for business purposes.
  • Entries should be recorded before travel ends or as soon as possible after each activity.
  • Where a trip is partly private, only the work-related portion of travel expenses is deductible. The diary helps establish what proportion of the trip was for business.
  • Travel expense records, including the diary, are kept for 5 years from the date of lodgment of the relevant tax return.
  • This tool is a record-keeping aid, not tax advice, and does not guarantee a valid claim.

Travel diary entries

Record each business activity as a separate row. The nature of the activity should be specific enough to identify the business purpose; a general description alone may not be sufficient for the ATO.

No entries recorded yet.

Use “Add entry” to start. Each row is one business activity.
